The Influence of Accepting Attitude toward One`s Own Death on Life Satisfaction: the Mediating Effects of Social Support
Lee Jong-Wook

Woo Young-Mi
Abstract
This study analyzes the factors that affect life satisfaction of Korean elderly persons. In particular this study considers the question of whether having thought about one``s own funeral procedure affects his or her life satisfaction. The study also attempts to verify direct effects and indirect effects, focusing on the mediator of social support. A sample of 10,451 cases were drawn from the ¡°2014 Profiles and Welfare Needs of Elderly Persons,¡± conducted by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs in cooperation with the Ministry of Health and Welfare. The results of the analysis indicate that while an accepting attitude toward one``s own death does not show a meaningful relationship with one¡¯s life satisfaction, the completely mediated effect of social support does have a meaningful relationship with life satisfaction. In other words, an accepting attitude toward one¡¯s own death has an indirect influence on life satisfaction only by changes in social support. These results suggest that it is possible to improve life satisfaction of elderly persons by providing professional programs that diminish their anxiety toward death.
